‘Beweging’ is een reeks gratis filmavonden in Amsterdam, georganiseerd door de Communistische Jongerenbeweging (CJB), die tot doel heeft een sociale, gemeenschappelijke ruimte te creëren waar thema’s en kwesties met betrekking tot het leven van werkende mensen kunnen worden verbeeld en besproken door middel van cinema. Het doel van deze filmavonden is om verschillende gemeenschappen, groepen en initiatieven in Amsterdam met elkaar te verbinden door middel van films over de situatie van werkende mensen in zowel een lokale als een mondiale context, in de geest van internationale solidariteit. Gebruikmakend van de kracht van film onderzoeken we tijdens deze avonden de complexe en diverse ervaringen van werkende mensen en het medium film zelf. Ondanks dat de oorsprong van het medium film verbonden is met de geboorte van de moderne bourgeoisie en het kapitalisme, blijft het een van de meest krachtige en stimulerende culturele vormen door zijn vermogen om in te grijpen en de wereld opnieuw te verbeelden. Elke editie wordt vergezeld door een lokale filmmaker die een werk presenteert.
In deze eerste editie van Beweging vertonen we de korte film ‘Inner life of exterior plants’ van Juan Arturo García en de film ‘Atlantics’ van Mati Diop.
‘Inner life of exterior plants’ is een korte film die de reis van de banaan als koopwaar in het kapitalisme volgt. Een oorspronkelijk zuidoost Aziatisch gewas dat tegenwoordig voornamelijk in centraal Amerika wordt geteeld en verbouwd. De film laat zien hoe gewassen in het algemeen worden ontworteld uit hun oorspronkelijke omgeving voor winst en massaproductie. Migratie speelt een hoofdrol in deze film en laat parallellen zien met ons eigen leven in het kapitalisme.
Na het kijken van de film zullen we een kort nagesprek hebben met de filmmaker Juan Arturo García en kunnen vragen worden gesteld.
De hoofdfilm van de avond is ‘Atlantics’. Hoewel tegelijk een verboden liefdesverhaal, een stuk science-fiction en een broos verslag van illegale migratie, gaat een groot deel van Atlantics aandacht uit naar het dagelijks leven van de vrouwen in Dakar en de sociale beperkingen waarmee ze daar geconfronteerd worden.
De film portretteert de precariteit en de genderspecifieke realiteit van migrerende werkende mensen die worden gebruikt om de kapitalistische uitbuiting te voeden. Mannen die zich hebben uitgeput om een wereld op te bouwen die ze zich nooit zouden kunnen veroorloven, zijn drie maanden loon verschuldigd en hebben een punt van wanhoop bereikt. Deze film wordt vertoond met dubbele ondertiteling in het Engels én het Nederlands.
Over de sprekers
In zijn werk onderzoekt Juan Arturo García geaccentueerde levenswijzen, hun biopolitieke mogelijkheden en tactieken voor de representatie ervan. Zijn lopende onderzoek gaat over de correlaties tussen de politieke, territoriale en taalkundige implicaties van kosmopolitisme.

Gabriel is een van de oprichters van het concept ‘Beweging’ samen met Lila. Gabriel is van oorsprong muzikant en verbinder. Daarnaast is hij politiek actief in het comité ‘Nieuw-west in Verzet’ en betrokken bij verschillende lokale initiatieven in Amsterdam.

‘Beweging’ (movement) is a series of free movie nights in Amsterdam, organised by the Communist Youth Movement (CJB), which aims to create a social, communal space where themes and issues related to the lives of working people can be imagined and discussed through cinema. The series aims to connect different communities, groups and initiatives in Amsterdam through films about the situation of workers in both local and global contexts, in the spirit of internationalist solidarity. Drawing on the power of film – which, despite its origins being linked to the birth of capitalism, remains one of the most powerful and stimulating cultural forms through its ability to intervene and re-imagine the world – the films presented explore the complex and diverse experiences of working people and the medium of film itself.
Every edition is accompanied by a short film from a local filmmaker.
In this first edition of Movement, we screen the short film ‘Inner life of exterior plants’ by Juan Arturo García and the film ‘Atlantics’ by Mati Diop.
‘Inner life of exterior plants’ is a short film that follows the journey of the banana as a commodity in capitalism; an originally southeast Asian crop grown and cultivated today mainly in Central America. The film shows how crops in general are taken from their original environment for profit and mass production. Migration plays a starring role in this short film and shows parallels to our own lives in capitalism.
After watching the film, we will have a brief Q&A with the filmmaker Juan Arturo García.
The main film of the evening is ‘Atlantics’. Although at once a forbidden love story, a piece of science fiction and a fragile account of illegal migration, much of Atlantics focuses on the daily lives of women in Dakar and the social constraints they face there. The film, winner of the 2019 Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, portrays the vulnerability and gendered realities of migrant working people used to feed capitalist exploitation. This film is screened with double subtitles in English and in Dutch.
About the speakers
In his work, Juan Arturo García examines accented lifestyles, their biopolitical potentials and tactics for their representation. His ongoing research deals with the correlations between the political, territorial and linguistic implications of cosmopolitanism.

About the organisers
Gabriel is one of the founders of the concept ‘Beweging’ together with Lila. Gabriel is originally a musician and connector. In addition, he is politically active in anti-gentrification groups and involved in several local initiatives in Amsterdam.
Lila is one of the founders of the concept ‘Beweging’ together with Gabriel. She is a cultural worker and silversmith whose practice focuses on the collaborative creation and maintenance of infrastructures and settings that enable the material conditions for communing and collaborative knowledge-production.
