Tijdens de Art Summer School bij New Metropolis afgelopen juli, gingen we op zoek naar plekken in de stad die zich bevinden tussen ideaal en werkelijkheid. We vertelden elkaar verhalen die voor ons aan die plekken verbonden zijn: reële en imaginaire verhalen, verlangens en ideeën. Zo begonnen we met andere ogen te kijken naar de vertrouwde wijken en parken van Nieuw-West.
De openbare ruimtes in de stad kun je zien als verzamelingen van gebeurtenissen, verhalen en herinneringen. Elk marktplein, elke bibliotheek, elk park herbergt zulke verzamelingen. De verzameling van een plek kan in verbinding staan met de verzameling van een andere plek. De bewoners van de stad kunnen die verbindingen ook zelf oproepen en creëren. Heteropia noemt de Franse filosoof Michel Foucault dat: specifieke ruimtes, deels open én besloten, die een uitwisseling veroorzaken tussen aan de ene kant de fysieke plek en aan de andere kant de innerlijke ruimtes van verbeelding en herinnering.
Met verschillende oefeningen onderzochten we die uitwisseling. We verkenden hoe het is om je in elkaars verhalen te verplaatsen. De ene plek deed ons aan een andere plek denken. Het ene verhaal riep het andere verhaal op. Met onze ideeën verplaatsten we als het ware verschillende plekken en ruimtes, we brachten ze met elkaar in verbinding en ze veranderden mee met onze verhalen.
Tijdens het programmaonderdeel ‘Verzamelingen van Nieuw-West’ reflecteren we samen met Bureau Postjesweg op die gesprekken met de deelnemers van de Art Summer School en het aanwezige publiek. Om al improviserend, deze verzamelingen en het onderliggende begrip van plaats te verruimen.

Garden Collectives is een vervolg op het filmproject Gardens of Fez. In dit programma zet Heidi Vogels haar onderzoek voort met kunstenaars en deelnemers in de wijken van de Westelijke Tuinsteden.
Bureau Postjesweg
Bureau Postjesweg is een platform voor tentoonstellingen, presentaties en uitwisseling in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Gelegen aan de metrohalte Postjesweg, verkent en bevraagt Bureau Postjesweg de transities in Amsterdam Nieuw-West en brengt deze in kaart samen met kunstenaars, deskundigen, bewoners en publiek. Als gastvrije én kritische ruimte voor reflectie, interactie en verbinding, werkt Bureau Postjesweg als een groeiend collectief van kunstenaars en curatoren. We werken procesgericht aan lange termijn projecten die zijn ingebed in de sociale en culturele context van Nieuw-West. Het Bureau Postjesweg kernteam wordt gevormd door Iris Dik (urban curator), Heidi Vogels (kunstenaar en filmmaker) en Holger Nickisch (kunstenaar en curator).

Collections of Nieuw-West
Last July, during the Art Summer School at New Metropolis, we went in search of urban locations situated between ideality and reality. We told one another stories we associated with those places: real and imaginary narratives, desires and ideas. Consequently, we started looking at familiar neighbourhoods and parks in Nieuw-West through different eyes.
We can consider the urban public space as collections of events, stories and memories. Every market square, library and park holds such collections. One place’s collection can be related to another place’s. City residents can also evoke and create these connections. French philosopher Michel Foucault calls this concept a heterotopia: specific spaces, partly open and closed, that cause an exchange between the physical place and the internal spaces of imagination and memory.
We investigated this exchange through various exercises. We explored imagining ourselves in another’s story. One place called another place to mind. One story evoked another. With our ideas, we transposed, as it were, different places and spaces. As we connected them, they changed along with our stories.
During the Collections of Nieuw-West event with Bureau Postjesweg, we reflect on our conversations with the Art Summer School participants and the audience to improvise and broaden these collections and the underlying understandings of place.

Bureau Postjesweg
Bureau Postjesweg is a platform for exhibitions, presentations and exchange in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Located at the Postjesweg metro stop, Bureau Postjesweg explores and questions the transitions in Amsterdam Nieuw-West and maps these together with artists, experts, residents and the public. As a welcoming and critical space for reflection, interaction and connection, Bureau Postjesweg works as a growing collective of artists and curators. We work process-oriented on long-term projects that are embedded in the social and cultural context of Nieuw-West. Bureau Postjesweg coreteam is formed by Iris Dik (urban curator), Heidi Vogels (artist and filmmaker) and Holger Nickisch (artist and curator).
