From Brazilian Capoeira to dance movements in Indonesia and the Philippines: Dance is a powerful carrier of culture and demonstrates resistance against the oppression of colonial powers.
What are the challenges for people with a background of colonisation in preserving their cultural heritage, especially in communities excluded from their fundamental rights? Deby Subiyanti, a supporter of undocumented migrants and a graduate of the STKW Surabaya Dance Academy in 2003, shares insights into dance as a form of protest against colonial oppressors in Indonesia throughout history. After that we will further discuss the lack of rights, the exclusion of undocumented individuals in the Netherlands, and the global impact of racism and colonisation on culture. We close off the program by collaborating on a dance movement symbolising resistance against racism and discrimination in protest. After the workshop, we will enjoy delicious Indonesian snacks together.
